Set amid the backdrop of Ayodhya, almost twenty-five thousand years ago, these century-old children's novels give readers a glimpse into the daily happenings in an ancient Indian village. The author tells about her thoughts on how modern day women would react to the different things that happen in this fictional world. She has also included passages that go into more detail about many of the characters and their thoughts and feelings. The premise for these novels is interesting but it could be made much better with time spent developing specific themes or expanding on what is happening to each character in particular. Like many authors who have a gift for writing, the novel is a good one but could have benefited from a rewrite or two. The novel opens with a set of twins who live in a small village in ancient India, known as Ayodhya. All the children of the village are named after Gods and Goddesses and each one carries both Hindu and Muslim names. Secrets are kept in this hidden community for fear of losing their identity in the outside world. This is especially true for Aditi, who is disliked by her mother because she is not named after any Hindu God or Goddess. Her mother, Naazneen, has a deep fear of breast feeding as her own breasts were over-used as a child to feed not only her siblings but those of others as well. The first novel starts with the untimely birth of a baby boy named Karan. The young boy's navel is twisted and cut on the suggestion of a holy woman who comes to the village to help the new mother. Not long after this, Aditi is born and she too has an unusual birthmark over her nose. The twins are known as Karan-Aditi throughout their childhood. Their mother, Naazneen, has an unending hatred for her daughter and is convinced that the Gods have cursed her. The boys of the village tease them mercilessly and nickname Aditi as 'pug-face'. Karan and Aditi are best friends but also play different roles in their young lives. As children, Karan takes care of his sister and defends her against all who would harm her. At the same time, he is a very mischievous child and often gets into trouble with his mother and father for this reason. Aditi becomes more responsible as she grows up and becomes more aware of the tensions between Naazneen and herself. She becomes a warrior when she is required to defend her brother. At a young age, Karan and Aditi meet a gypsy woman in their village who passes them in a mirror. The mirror describes their life and features of the world in an ancient language none of the twins understood. The next novel in the series is titled "When You Wish Upon A Star" and starts with Aditi's wedding to Surojit, the son of a Bania from the neighborhood. During this time, however, she is still married to Surojit's father who does not want his son to marry someone from outside the town. cfa1e77820
